This is one of my favorite set of photographs ever. Every time I see them, I can’t get over how simply beautiful they are—they’re breathtaking.

It might look like something went horribly wrong in the images above, but the psychedelic colors and patterns are actually deliberate. Peter Hoffman coated his negatives with a tiny bit of gasoline.
After letting it burn for a few split seconds, Peter quickly extinguishes the flame and prints the image from the newly ‘ruined’ negative.
“Now, for the first time in its billions of years of history, our planet is protected by far-seeing sentinels, able to anticipate danger from the distant future–a comet on a collision course, or global warming–and devise schemes for doing something about it. The planet has finally grown its own nervous system: us.”
